A majestic relic

Annihilation of a Grand Lady 1893 to 2022

A longtime landmark — viewed as an eyesore to some, or a Gothic mansion mixed with haunted castle to others — has disappeared.

The last building to be taken down was Halycon Hall. Originally built as a luxury hotel, the building became home to Bennett College in 1907 after the hotel failed to catch on. The following photo gallery shows the destruction and final chapter of this historic school for girls in Millbrook, NY, only 50 minutes from Danbury.

The Bennett Park project calls for demolishing the old college buildings and refashioning the 32-acre campus into a green gateway into the village of Millbrook. The park will include walking and bike trails and a parking lot to ensure it is easily accessible.
